NEXT monthly workshop IN may 2024

saturday 11 may 2024 - 11am-4pm

Iyengar Yoga House’s popular monthly workshops have a simple format: an active 2-hour asana practice in the morning is followed by a restorative session in the afternoon. There is 1 hour break at 1pm.

We are warmly welcoming all students who have at least completed the Induction Course or have an equivalent experience of Iyengar Yoga. It’s not advisable however to come to these intensive days after a long brake from yoga practice

At first it may feel daunting to attend a longer practice session if you are used to 1-hour classes and therefore we offer the option to attend half day if you prefer. These workshops are regularly held every month (almost…), so that everyone has an opportunity to build up the confidence and stamina to practice for longer.

These events are also an opportunity to meet like-minded people.

SOME FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT IYENGAR YOGA and its teachers

  • Iyengar yoga concentrates on postural alignment and body awareness, not just for the alignment of one body part with another, but also for the functioning of the whole human being. If the body is aligned with precision then the breath is aligned with the same precision, and then the mind, emotions and senses become balanced.

  • Standing postures form the foundation of each class and of everyone’s regular yoga practice. In these one learns the fundamentals of how to adjust and align the body correctly. In this manner the most advanced postures will be understood and practiced safely.

  • With an emphasis on the standing poses, over time, other postures are added, including forward bends and back bends, twists, inversions and restorative poses. Each class ends with relaxation.

  • Classes follow a monthly rota as set by the mother institute in Pune, of standing poses, forward  and back bends, plus restorative practice, covered for a week each.

  • As the students progress, Pranayama (the control of the breath) is introduced.

  • Certified Iyengar Yoga teachers are held to an unusually rigorous standard. Only after 6 years of training and evaluation via a mentoring programme, they become certified.

  • Iyengar Yoga Associations established all over the world take care of certification procedures and standards as set by the mother institute in Pune, India.

  • Teachers are expected to follow regular classes and be guided by Senior teachers.

  • Many teachers regularly visit the Indian mother institute to follow classes with the Iyengar family and their Senior teachers.

  • Clear demonstrations and specific teaching points which awaken the body’s intelligence are the marks of an Iyengar Yoga teacher.

  • The use of props, which Iyengar Yoga is famous for has manyfold functions aside form the obvious one of helping preform a pose more easily.

  • Props allow for a deeper penetration into the posture, as well as a longer stay.

  • Props are props to the awareness and body intelligence as they allow better understanding of each pose

  • Teachers devise sequences of poses, which build skill and understanding, from posture to posture, and from class to class.

iyengar yoga house turns one!

Sunday 22 May 2022

On Sunday 22 May 25+ of us came together to celebrate Iyengar Yoga House's 1st birthday. It was an afternoon of yoga practice with tea and cakes, on a very sunny day. It was a demonstration that yoga can bring people together and that everyone can practice, from 12 to 70 years of age. We were very touched by everyone’s enthusiasm. We asked our regular students to bring along friends or relatives who were curious about Iyengar yoga so that the could try it. Many who came are signing up for regular classes!
